A Tribute to George M. ("Mike") Zelter
It is with great sadness that the Cohn-Haddow Center notes the passing of our former chair and co-chair of the Advisory Board and our dear friend, George M. Zeltzer. From the Center's inception in 1988 up until his decision to step down from the chairmanship in 2009 because of ill health, "Mike" was a leading force in ensuring that the Center would become the major institution for the dissemination of Jewish scholarship and culture on the Wayne State campus and in the community of metropolitan Detroit. A major fundraiser and a generous donor himself, Mike along with his late wife Pearl recognized early on the invaluable contribution that the Center could make to Jewish life on a local, national, and international level. Mike was a member of the Anthony Wayne Society of the University and worked hard to cement the historic relationship between Wayne State and its Detroit Jewry. Mike was also a visible presence in the Detroit Jewish community as president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and of the Sholem Aleichem Institue and in national Jewish life as a member of the Advisory Board of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture and as a friend of Brandeis University. His sage advice and generous heart will be sorely missed.
May the memory of George M. Zeltzer be a blessing to all of us who knew and loved him.
